Baptismal Testimony

My life and attitudes before following Christ…

I genuinely thought that it would be impossible for me to be a Christian. I was not raised in a Christian home, and my parents were not supportive. By God’s grace, my parents witnessed my baptism. My wife and her family are Christian and they encouraged me to come to Church, but I was hesitant. After the birth of our first child, my wife and I were invited to a fellowship for couples with kids. The other couples were mature Christians and they became our friends.

How I realize my (sin) problem…

I have been going to North York (Chinese) Baptist Church and attending Sunday school there for the past 5 years. What made God real for me was Jesus Christ. As I studied the Gospels, I was confronted with the words that Jesus spoke. I was amazed with the authority with which He spoke. Is Jesus who He says He is?

From the bible, I learned about God’s holiness and righteousness. I heard about how God time and time again tried to steer his people to righteousness, and how his people failed to live up to his standards. It made me aware of the sinfulness of my thoughts and actions. Although the Gospels taught me who Jesus was, and I believed He was who He said He was, I did not feel freedom – only the weight of my sins. I knew that I could not approach God until sin was dealt with, and that only Jesus could give me a new life.

How I became a Christian…

I think a turning point was when I became a father. Since becoming a father, I can better appreciate a father’s love for his child, a father’s sorrow from his child’s disobedience, and this made me more receptive to the love of God. The bible pointed out to me that God has used less than perfect people for His purposes, and that He is full of grace and mercy. I only have to look as far as my daughters to see His miracles. I am amazed with their natural acceptance of God, and that is something I lost as an adult. Jesus has been extremely patient with me, allowing me time to accept Him.

What being a Christian means to me…

Being a Christian means admitting that I do not want to go on struggling alone, that I need the help of Jesus to turn away from sin, and that I want to experience the joy of salvation. Being a Christian means I can depend on the God’s promises, being reunited with my heavenly father, and to be a child of God.
